Asking heaven and earth,
What is the deepest camaraderie?
The two tang poets, Yuan Zhen and
Bai Ju-yi,
Supping their cups beneath the flowers,
Playing writing games,
Taking warmth together under a chrysanthemum quilt.
Happier, perhaps, than the hermit poct
Tao Yuan-ming,
Facing the bamboo fence around his hut alone.
